WAS JESUS TRULY GOD AND TRULY HUMAN?

One point of Bible teaching we can't get wrong without destroying the truth of the Bible concerns the deity and humanity of Christ.  In a study of 1 John 4 we find a heavy emphasis on this particular teaching.  Of all the commentaries I have read on this passage Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown gives one of the most detailed accounts of a crucial part of 1 John 4:2 -"Jesus Christ is come in the flesh — a twofold truth confessed, that Jesus is the Christ, and that He is come (the Greek perfect tense implies not a mere past historical fact, as the aorist would, but also the present continuance of the fact and its blessed effects) in the flesh (“clothed with flesh”: not with a mere seeming humanity, as the Docetae afterwards taught: He therefore was, previously, something far above flesh). His flesh implies His death for us, for only by assuming flesh could He die (for as God He could not), Heb_2:9, Heb_2:10, Heb_2:14, Heb_2:16; and His death implies His LOVE for us (Joh_15:13). To deny the reality of His flesh is to deny His love, and so cast away the root which produces all true love on the believer’s part (1Jo_4:9-11, 1Jo_4:19). Rome, by the doctrine of the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary, denies Christ’s proper humanity." There's some good material to think through.

See you on Thursday morning as we encourage one another in knowing, loving, and living the truth of God's word.

A DEEP LOVE THAT CALLS FOR A PASSIONATE RESPONSE

Sweet little Samuel--now called a child of Willie and Hannah.  Read on to see how this parallels the situation of all who belong to God.

1John 3:1"See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God;..." This verse is one of my most loved verses of all the Bible.  If you take but a few minutes to meditate on this incredible truth, surely your heart will be deeply moved.  As always, John Gill has great depth in his comments about it.  "...this blessing comes not by nature, nor by merit, but by grace, the grace of adoption; which is of persons unto an inheritance they have no legal right unto; the spring of it is the everlasting and unchangeable love of God, for there was no need on the adopter's side, he having an only begotten and beloved Son, and no worth and loveliness in the adopted, they being by nature children of wrath; it is a privilege that exceeds all others, and is attended with many; so that it is no wonder the apostle breaks out in this pathetic (in this case meaning moving or touching-NS) manner, and calls upon the saints to view it with admiration and thankfulness:..." Truly this should overwhelm our souls and change our lives.

Join us this Thursday morning at 9:30 as we study 1 John 2:28-3:24 and dig into understanding a bit more completely God's great love for us and our essential response.

THE ANOINTING

In our study this week of 1 John 2:18-27 one particular verse has captured my attention.  1Jn 2:20"But you have been anointed by the Holy One, .."  I found Adam Clarke to have the most well-said commentary on this verse. “As oil was used among the Asiatics for the inauguration of persons in important offices, and this oil was acknowledged to be an emblem of the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit, without which the duties of those offices could not be discharged; so it is put here for the Spirit himself, who presided in the Church, and from which all gifts and graces flowed.” (Clarke)  David Guzik also had a further comment that should be a good encouragement to all of us to be more sensitive to God's direction in our daily lives.  "Anointing has the idea of being filled with, and blessed by, the Holy Spirit. This is something that is the common property of all Christians, but something we can and should become more submitted and responsive to." Beautiful.

See you Thursday morning for a good time of encouraging one another to live fully for God.
